Sealing the Window Trim on Lap Siding
- Jun 11, 2018 -

Whether you are repainting, replacing a window, or replacing the siding on your house, the caulking around the window trim is a very important element to get right, especially with lap siding. Overlapping siding layers create gaps that, if left untreated, allow water to infiltrate around the window. In addition, a gap of between 1/8 and 1/4 inch between the edge of the siding and the window trim requires treatment as well. Apply caulking compounds (acrylic silicone/acrylic sealant/silicone/sealant/adhesive/potting sealant/potting adhesive/potting compound/UV glue/Silicone sealant/Potting silicone sealant/Huitian adhesive/Huitian silicone/Huitian sealant/flange sealant/conductive sealant/Electrical sealant/electronic adhesive/epoxy sealant/epoxy adhesive/PU adhesive/gasker maker/thread locker/Thread adhesive) rated for exterior use when caulking window trim.

1

Scrape the side of the window trim next to the siding and the immediate edge of the lap siding with a paint scraper to remove old caulk and loose paint. Inspect the window trim for dry rot. Repair or replace damaged trim before continuing. Clean the siding edges around the window trim and the window trim with a clean rag.

2

Pull the tip of the silicone (acrylic silicone/acrylic sealant/silicone/sealant/adhesive/potting sealant/potting adhesive/potting compound/UV glue/Silicone sealant/Potting silicone sealant/Huitian adhesive/Huitian silicone/Huitian sealant/flange sealant/conductive sealant/Electrical sealant/electronic adhesive/epoxy sealant/epoxy adhesive/PU adhesive/gasker maker/thread locker/Thread adhesive) tube slowly along the joint of the window trim and the siding, holding the caulk gun at a 45-degree angle. Maintain steady pressure on the trigger while moving at a uniform speed along the seam to create a uniform bead of caulk.

3

Fill the gaps created by the overlapped siding by slowing or stopping your motion momentarily to allow caulk to push into the gap until it is full. Resume your earlier pace.

4

Smooth and evenly distribute the caulk into the gaps by dragging your finger along the bead of caulk. Press any excess caulk on your finger into each gap created by the lap siding and then smooth it. Inspect the completed caulk line to ensure complete coverage in all gaps. Add more caulk as needed.

5

Remove excess caulk with a damp rag, being careful not to disturb the completed caulk line.
